What is Hawaiiana?

Hawaiiana is a popular term used in reference the history and various aspects of the culture of Hawaii, currently a region and the 50th state of the United States. It should be noted that the earlier people who settled Hawaii were without writing. The kept their history through chants and legends. With death of the kuhunas and other men of learning much of the early history of Hawaiina has disappeared.

We do know the early Hawaiiana history started with the Polynesians who discovered and settled the islands. The people came form the Marquesas, which it is believed, started as early as 600 or 700 AD. More came about 1000 AD from the Society Islands.

Modern Hawaiiana

Modern Hawaiian history as well as recorded history begins on January 20, 1778, when Captain James Cook's expedition made its first contact with the Hawaiian people on the islands of Kauai and Niihau. Captain Cook was not the first man to "discover" the Hawaiian Islands. It is believe the Spanish arrived earlier but there is little proof, so Captain Cook is considered the first known European to arrive.

Hawaiiana as we know it.

The Hawaiiana magic has captivated the hearts and imaginations of visitors for over 200 years. The infectious Aloha Spirit is something they take home with them not only as memories, but also in tangible reminders of their trips: a shirt, a carved perfume bottle, and a figurine. At the least these mementos hold cherished spots in their homes, but for those who are truly smitten, they have become the centerpieces of a complete design motif based around the Hawaiiana experience.

It is not difficult to enjoy the beautiful colors and exotic flavors that help define Hawaiiana and these islands of paradise. Luscious postcards from the early 20th century have drawn visitors and collectors through alluring days of Hawaii's history as a booming tourist, agricultural, and, most importantly romantic retreat.

The tokens brought home that capture this romance and have lure millions of people to the Hawaiian Islands, since being a Territory of the United States, from 1900 to 1959. The Hawaiiana collectibles show all aspects of the Hawaiian culture, including Aloha clothing, jewelry, surfing paper goods and prints, dolls, woodenware, and specially made souvenirs. Some of this Hawaiiana is so eagerly sought after, worldwide, by collectors.
