| How Do I Know if I Have a Learning Disability? | |
| You are reading a chapter for homework and you realize that you really can't remember what you have already read. In class, everyone moves along turning pages, but you get stuck.
You bring your homework home and open up your book but have no idea where to even start. You don't want to let your parents know that you're having a hard time because you're afraid they'll think you're dumb. Does this describe you? If this sounds familiar, you may have a learning disability. Don't worry! All this means is that you process information in a different way than other kids. Kids with LD may also answer yes to many of these questions:
To find out if a student has a learning disability, a school psychologist or learning specialist might give the student some special tests. Tests can show whether a student has a learning disability and what that student's learning strengths and difficulties are. Sometimes, a student with a learning disability is placed in a special classroom with a teacher who is trained to help students overcome learning problems. Some students may be in a special classroom for learning support full time, but most are in a learning support class just for subjects that give them trouble - math or language arts, for example. Other students just use a special classroom for a few hours a week, and get help with their regular schoolwork from a special teacher or learning tutor. Most students with learning disabilities join their classmates in regular classes for other subjects and learning activities. Every student wants learning to be trouble-free, of course. But for a student who has a learning disability, it can be a relief to find out what's wrong. Finally discovering what's been standing in the way of doing your best in school and knowing what to do about it can feel like a whole new beginning. With the right help and the right approach, learning can start to be much more fun - as it should be. |
