This typical
teenage girl used her time at the arcade to lose weight. She
started playing a popular video game called "Dance Dance
Revolution (DDR)" at the age of 17. She was a senior in high
school and weighed about 235 lbs. After four and a half years
of playing this video game, she weighed about 140 lbs.
She never imagined how much a video game
would affect her health and weight producing positive results. This video game also
helped her become a more self-confident teen. Before she discovered this video
game, she was inactive. She wasn’t used to dancing regularly.
She was an active member in a
band, an orchestra, and drama. She had played other video games. She
didn't exercise regularly. Her unhealthy weight made her unhappy.
Like most obese people, she started losing hope of weighing her proper weight.
Losing so much weight overwhelmed her. She used the internet as an
escape. People on the internet didn’t know she was overweight.
When she went to college the new
environment made her increasingly uncomfortable and unhappy.
Her weight started to yo-yo hovering around 235 lbs. In
October of 2002, a new version of DDR USA was released. It
contained a ton of new songs to dance to.
She tried the game out. She soon became addicted to the new video
game. Her activity increased. She began frequenting the video arcade almost every
day. She played the video game for hours and hours.
She discovered a
website, which had a Bulletin Board where gamers met
online and talked about DDR and other music games. She quickly became friends
with the regulars. She found friends that motivated her to play more
frequently. It was during this time she began losing weight.
She lost 45 lbs in the first
six months with no change in her diet whatsoever. This achievement encouraged her
to follow a more healthy diet. She became more conscious of what
she ate, which helped her lose an additional 20 lbs.
Playing the game regularly coupled with a
healthy diet has caused her to maintain a healthy weight,
which she didn’t think was possible. She enjoyed playing an
active video game. It changed her life.
